Overview

The brief, in brief.

×

The ask

Make a radical wave-guide acoustic system wearable, durable, and unmistakably Psyko.

×

The constraint

Preserve fragile psychoacoustic effects while surviving daily, high-intensity use.

×

The result

A Red Dot Design Award-winning headset with a signature silhouette.

Psyko Audio set out to do something stereo headphones can't: deliver true, directional 3D surround sound from a wearable headset. Their breakthrough was acoustic: an innovative speaker array and wave-guide system that channels sound across the headband rather than firing it straight into the ears.

That breakthrough created a design problem. The very thing that made Psyko special (a physically larger, more complex acoustic architecture) was also the thing standing between the technology and a product people would actually want to put on their heads.

As a full-service product design studio, we guided the project from early concept sketches through detailed prototyping and final production support, translating a complex acoustic system into a durable product that meets rigorous standards while staying simple to operate.

The Challenge

A breakthrough you could hear, but not yet wear.

The wave-guide system demanded internal volume and a specific geometry that conventional headphone forms simply don't allow. Every millimetre that made the acoustics work made the product heavier, bulkier, and harder to balance on a human head.

On top of that, gaming hardware lives a brutal life: yanked off, dropped, adjusted thousands of times, and worn for hours on end. The design had to honour the acoustics, respect the human wearing it, and survive the abuse, all at once.

Behind the Design

Obstacles to Innovation

01

Translating complex tech into wearable form

The Challenge

Psyko's wave-guide and multi-speaker system needed real internal space and a precise layout, the opposite of the slim profile gamers expect from a headset.

Our Design Response

We architected the housing around the acoustic system rather than forcing the acoustics into a generic shell, distributing volume across the headband and ear cups so the size reads as intentional design language, not bulk.

02

Comfort for the long haul

The Challenge

A larger, heavier headset is a recipe for fatigue. Marathon sessions would expose every pressure point and balance flaw.

Our Design Response

Adjustable ear cups, lightweight materials, and carefully tuned weight distribution keep the load balanced and the contact points soft, so the headset disappears during long play.

03

Durability under daily abuse

The Challenge

Hinges, sliders, and connection points are the first things to fail on a headset that gets handled constantly and rarely gently.

Our Design Response

We reinforced every moving joint and connection and engineered them to endure repeated, high-intensity use: the parts most likely to break are the ones we over-built.

04

A signature look

The Challenge

In a crowded gaming market, another black headset disappears. Psyko needed a form that signalled "this is different" at a glance.

Our Design Response

We gave it a bold, recognisable silhouette that turns the larger acoustic architecture into the brand: the shape itself communicates the cutting-edge technology inside.

05

Optimised acoustics

The Challenge

The psychoacoustic effects at the core of the product are fragile: the wrong material or cavity shape would quietly undermine the entire value proposition.

Our Design Response

Every material and housing decision was prototyped and tested against the acoustic performance, so the industrial design protects the science instead of compromising it.

How We Got There

Our Approach

01

Discover

We immersed in the acoustic constraints and the realities of how gamers actually wear and handle headsets.

02

Design

Form exploration that turned the acoustic architecture into a confident, ownable silhouette.

03

Engineer

Prototyping and DFM that hardened the moving parts and proved the acoustics survived the housing.

04

Make

Production support and packaging to carry the design intact onto the shelf.

The Outcome

From lab breakthrough to Red Dot winner.

The finished headset wears its technology proudly: a thoughtful form factor, rugged construction, and a straightforward interface that show how hardware product development and industrial design come together to support real people in real-world conditions, where clarity and reliability matter most.

It went on to win a Red Dot Design Award, recognition not just of the acoustic innovation, but of the design work that made that innovation something a gamer would choose to wear.
