Overview

The brief, in brief.

×

The ask

Turn safety-critical sensing science into hardware operators would actually accept and use.

×

The constraint

Reliable performance in heat, dust, and vibration, while meeting strict safety standards.

×

The result

A rugged, plug-and-play fit-for-duty device that warns without becoming a distraction.

LUCI™ is the world's first intelligent operator fit-for-duty system, designed to help companies reduce the risks that come from drowsiness and distraction. Six Safety Systems brought the safety science; we brought the industrial design that makes it survive a worksite and earn an operator's trust.

A safety device only works if it's actually used and trusted. That makes the design stakes unusually high: get the ruggedness, the sensing, the integration, or the alerts wrong, and the whole safety premise collapses in the field.

As a full-service product design studio, we guided the project from early concept sketches through detailed prototyping and final production support, blending practical engineering with human-centred industrial design at every step.

The Challenge

Safety hardware lives or dies on trust.

Industrial operators are unforgiving critics. A device that's awkward, unreliable, or annoying gets ignored, disabled, or worked around, and an ignored safety device is worse than none at all, because it creates false confidence.

LUCI had to do something genuinely hard: sense operator state accurately across wildly variable conditions, integrate cleanly into existing workflows, alert clearly without becoming a hazard itself, and shrug off the heat, dust, and vibration of real industrial environments, all while meeting stringent safety standards.

Behind the Design

Obstacles to Innovation

01

Robustness in punishing environments

The Challenge

Industrial settings expose hardware to constant heat, dust, and contaminants that destroy consumer-grade devices in weeks.

Our Design Response

We engineered the housing and components to seal out contaminants and dissipate heat, so LUCI keeps working in exactly the conditions where it matters most.

02

Accurate sensing in variable conditions

The Challenge

Operator states like drowsiness vary with light, weather, and individual behaviour; the design had to support reliable sensing across all of them.

Our Design Response

We shaped the device geometry and sensor placement to maintain a consistent read on the operator regardless of cab lighting, sun angle, or how the person sits.

03

Seamless workflow integration

The Challenge

Safety devices only work if they fit how operators already work. Anything that disrupts the routine gets resented and bypassed.

Our Design Response

LUCI was designed for plug-and-play integration into existing operations; it slots into the workflow rather than demanding the workflow bend around it.

04

Clear alerts without distraction

The Challenge

An alert that startles or distracts an operator can cause the very incident it was meant to prevent.

Our Design Response

We created an interface that is unmistakable yet unobtrusive; it cuts through to warn at the right moment without becoming a hazard in its own right.

05

Compliance & safety standards

The Challenge

A fit-for-duty device has to satisfy stringent industrial safety requirements, not as an afterthought but by design.

Our Design Response

LUCI was developed to meet those standards from the ground up, with compliance baked into the engineering and material choices from day one.

How We Got There

Our Approach

01

Discover

We studied the operator, the cab, and the realities of the worksite to understand what trust actually requires.

02

Design

Human-centred form and interface design that an operator accepts rather than tolerates.

03

Engineer

Rugged, sealed construction and sensor integration proven against real-world conditions.

04

Make

DFM and production support to deliver a compliant, repeatable safety device at scale.

An ignored safety device is worse than none. We designed LUCI to be the one operators keep on.

The Outcome

A world-first, built to be trusted.

LUCI's thoughtful form factor, rugged construction, and straightforward interface demonstrate how hardware product development and industrial design come together to support real people in real-world conditions, where clarity and reliability matter most.

The result is a fit-for-duty system that doesn't just sense risk, but earns its place on the operator and in the workflow: the difference between a safety device that exists and one that actually works.
